The Reunion

The Mensah family hadn’t gathered under one roof in over a decade. So when Auntie Dora announced she was hosting a grand reunion at her newly built mansion in Lin City, everyone packed their best clothes and grudges.

The first few hours went well. Laughter filled the air, children chased each other across the garden, and Uncle Fiifi’s famous jollof simmered on the stove. But as night fell, the smiles began to slip.

It started when Cousin Kwame raised a toast and mentioned how he alone had

“made something of himself.”

Auntie Dora’s husband rolled his eyes, and someone muttered,

“With whose money?”

Silence. Then chaos. Old secrets came tumbling out faster than the rain outside. The loan from Grandma’s will? Apparently never paid back. The land dispute? Far from settled. Even the jollof became a weapon when Uncle Fiifi began scoping out portion of it to knockout relatives before he hurled the pot across the room, declaring,

“You people don’t deserve my cooking!”

By midnight, someone had smashed Auntie Dora’s chandelier. Cousin Lydia was crying in the bathroom. And the police were outside, responding to a domestic disturbance.

When the last car drove away, Auntie Dora sat alone in her perfect house, staring at the ruins of her family dream.

The next morning, she sent a message to the group chat:

“Let’s not do this again. Ever.”
