Headlights

The bus was almost empty. It was past midnight, and the driver had been on the highway for nearly two hours. There were only six passengers left. Then the driver saw two bright lights in the distance. He slowed down.

"Another car,"

He muttered. The lights were approaching quickly. Too quickly. One of the passengers, an old man sitting at the back, suddenly stood up and shouted.

"Stop the bus."

The driver laughed.

"What?"

"Stop the bus and turn off the lights and engine. Now."

The old man's voice was trembling. Everyone turned toward him. He pointed through the windshield.

"Those aren't headlights."

The driver looked again. The two lights were moving perfectly side by side. No vehicle. No road noise. Just two enormous glowing circles racing toward them. The driver accelerated. The lights accelerated too. The passengers began screaming. The driver swerved left. The lights moved left. He swerved right. They moved right.

"They're following us!"

Someone shouted. The driver pushed the bus to its limit. The lights disappeared. For several seconds, everything was silent. Then one passenger looked through the side window. Two glowing lights were running beside the bus. Not behind it but beside it. Something black was moving underneath the lights. The old man whispered:

"They've found us."

One of the passengers flashed a flashlight on one of the light and saw a black creature with its mouth wide open and drooling running on two legs. Suddenly, one of the light slammed into the side of the bus. The windows shook and the driver lost control. The bus crashed through the roadside barrier and rolled down the embankment.

When emergency crews arrived the next morning, they found the wreckage. There were no survivors. Except for the old man. He was found nearly a mile away, badly injured. When investigators asked him what happened, he looked toward the dark highway and said with a trembling voice

"They were hunting us."
