The Jackrabbit Always Wins

The jackrabbit was a real asshole. Everyone in the forest knew it. He bragged constantly about being the fastest animal alive. And unfortunately, nobody could really argue with him. Every race ended the same way: the jackrabbit crossed the finish line first while everyone else arrived behind him, exhausted and humiliated.

But winning wasn't enough for him. He wanted everyone to know he had won. Every few days, he'd challenge someone new to a race not because he had anything to prove, but because he enjoyed rubbing it in. Then one day, the box turtle finally got tired of listening.

"Why not? I'll race you"

The  turtle said. The jackrabbit stared at him. Then he burst out laughing.

"Seriously? You want to race me?"

He said. The turtle nodded. The jackrabbit grinned.

"Alright. Let's go."

The race began and the jackrabbit disappeared down the path, leaving the box turtle crawling slowly through a cloud of dust. It wasn't even close. Of course it wasn't. The jackrabbit always won. But halfway through the race, he decided to make things interesting. Winning too quickly wouldn't be entertaining. He stopped beneath a tree.

"I'll take a nap, let the turtle catch up a little."

He thought. He closed his eyes and slept. Much longer than he intended. When the jackrabbit finally woke up, the sun was already beginning to disappear behind the trees. His eyes widened.

"Oh, shit."

He ran. Faster than he'd ever run before.

Branches snapped behind him. Leaves exploded beneath his feet. But when he reached the finish line, the crowd was already screaming. The box turtle had won. For the first time in his life, the jackrabbit had lost.

That night, the box turtle sat at home with his family, telling the story again and again.

His children listened excitedly as he described crossing the finish line.

"You see, you should never give up. Just keep moving forward, and eventually, you can overcome almost anything."

The turtle told them proudly. His wife smiled. His children gathered around him. Then the front door exploded inward. Everyone froze.

Standing in the doorway was the jackrabbit. His fur was dirty. His eyes were empty. And in his paw, he carried a hammer. The turtle slowly stood.

"Jackrabbit…”

The jackrabbit stepped inside. The children began to scream. The turtle tried to protect his family, but the jackrabbit had spent his entire life being faster than everyone else. And tonight, he wasn't interested in racing.

By morning, the forest was quiet again and turtle and his family were no more. The jackrabbit sat alone at the turtle family's dinner table. He calmly finished the meal that had been prepared for the celebration. Every last bite. Then he leaned back in his chair and smiled. Because, as far as the jackrabbit was concernedthe jackrabbit always wins
