The ascent up Blackwood Ridge is a grueling four mile climb, typically occupied by the rhythmic tap of trekking poles and the heavy breathing of fellow hikers. You first see him near the two mile marker. A man in a vibrant neon yellow windbreaker and clean khaki shorts. He is standing six inches away from a massive, ancient cedar tree, his forehead nearly touching the rough bark. His arms hang limp at his sides. You offer a cheery greeting as you pass, but he doesn't respond. He doesn't even tilt his head. You figure he’s practicing some high concept forest bathing or perhaps just caught in a moment of intense mountain vertigo. You keep moving, the neon yellow eventually swallowed by the deep green of the forest. Three hours later, the summit is behind you and the sun is beginning its slow descent. By the age of 12, Goldie had moved between two foster homes, with each placement ending under mysterious circumstances. In every instance, the families reported that their most precious belongings had been systematically ruined or displaced, and Goldie was always found in a state of distress, claiming an intruder had broken in. A family of three, Arthur, Elena, and their 5 year old son Leo, decided to welcome Goldie into their suburban home. They dismissed the rumors of her past as unfortunate luck. However, Arthur's cautious nature led him to secretly install hidden, cloud-backed security cameras in every room. For four months, the household thrived on warmth and laughter, until a stormy Tuesday night when the house was found in total disarray. When investigators reviewed the footage the next morning, a different truth came to light. The cameras did not show an outside intruder. Instead, they captured Goldie moving through the house with chilling calm. She wasn't lo...
Elena and Diana, sisters with a knack for getting under each other’s skin, were driving through the Alaskan mountains in the middle of a snowstorm from hell. The wind screamed, tossing snow across the windshield of Elena’s beat up SUV like it was trying to bury them alive. They’d wanted to take separate cars, anything to avoid the inevitable bickering that always flared up when they were stuck together. But their parents, ever the optimists, had practically begged them to ride together, hoping a few hours on the road might patch up their rocky relationship. So, there they were, grudgingly sharing the car, headed to their parents’ place for a visit. For the first hour, it was dead silent. Not a word. Just the crunch of tires on snow and the wipers slapping back and forth, barely keeping up with the blizzard. Elena, behind the wheel, kept her eyes glued to the road, her hands tight on the steering wheel, while Diana stared out the passenger window, her breath fogging up the glass. ...
